2009 Halloween Kitsuke

20091031 Grouper / Wombat Kitsuke 09, originally uploaded by SnowFoxCreations.
SuperWombatchan is on the left, wearing my Taisho era irotomesode + and antique red nagajuban and a Lady Murasaki motif tsuke obi.

I'm the one on the right, wearing a blue-green ofurisode with botan (peony flower) motif and a Taisho era Roman maru obi.

(LOL at our different skin tones- we have the same parents and get the same amount of sunlight, but I inherited all of the Native American traits, while SuperWombatchan could pass as a British person. Genetics are fabulous.)

I tried using padding on myself so that the lines would be more even, but it still didn't make the kimono folds even and DID make me bloat out so that the obi didn't fit right, so I think from now on I'll just skip the padding (it's not that comfortable, anyway.)

I had lots of problems with obi- mine wouldn't fold right (it has NO center obi shin, believe it or not- are all antique maru obi like that?) and SuperWombatchan wore a tsuke obi, but I had never tied that particular tsuke obi before, and she was squirming, so I think I tied it too low for someone as young as her- and that really bothered my OCD, so I kept trying to adjust it. :/

She was going to wear her ofurisode, but decided to pick something out of my collection instead.

In the end, Halloween was just another excuse to wear kimono. ^^;

Maiko Vampire Marks

SuperWombatchan just came in and was reading IGF over my shoulder, and let drop this enlightening comment:

"You know those things on the back of maiko [their neck painting?] look like vampire marks."

0______o;

I had to deal with hearing that, and now you do too. XD

20091022 Kitsuke : Mustard Yellow Asanoha Komon

20091022 Kitsuke : Mustard Yellow Asanoha Komon, originally uploaded by SnowFoxCreations.
Sewn all by myself. :3 This is actually a comfy nagajuban, but I made it regular length in case I decided to use it for a yukata or dounuki. The skirt around it is one I sewed to use as a koshimaki (kimono underslip.)

I actually wore this as a nagajuban, but then I realized that together they would look a lot like an ancient "kosode" with "mobakama" so I tried an old-style wear. I found a reference image of that here later on: www.iz2.or.jp/english/fukusyoku/busou/9.htm

I think I got pretty close without looking at it. ^^; I was actually going by memories of the peasant dresses in the manga "Inuyasha" but I came more or less close...

The fabric was from WalMart, BTW. Every so often they get in really awesome printed fabrics- such as this yellow cotton featuring an Asanoha pattern.

Maiko Darari Obi Musubi Tutorial (Book Scans via Suara_Mas)

Suara Mas has uploaded a photo tutorial about tying a maiko's darari obi here at this page: Flickr Set: Darari Step by Step. If you're interested, go look at it. (Also, if you use it you should +fave the images- it's a nice thing to do.)

20091022 Kitsuke : Wine-Red Houmongi with Gold Mums

20091022 Kitsuke : Wine-Red Houmongi with Gold Mums, originally uploaded by SnowFoxCreations.
Dad bought this for me for Christmas last year. :3 This is the first time except then that I've worn it, though, since it's too formal and expensive to wear very often.

When I left home, my otaiko musubi was meticulously in place, but an hour in the car and 2 hours in church made it slide over at a weird angle. ^^;

This is my Dad's favorite among my kimono. It's SuperWombatchan's second fave- she really likes my purple iromuji + purple ama coat.

What type of obi musubi is that? Someone? Please tell me...

Does someone know what type of obi tie this is? It looks like kind of like otaiko and ribbon musubi got married and had a kid. ^^ Is this a real musubi, and if so, what is it called? Does anyone know how to tie this? :?
